In 1924,  Mr. Zack Layfield started Layfield’s Garage at 141 Marietta StreetAtlanta, Georgia. This building, at the corner of Marietta Street and Techwood Drive, had previously been a Blacksmith shop just blocks from Five Points, the heart of downtown Atlanta. In approximately 1948, Layfield’s Garage became Layfield Motors Service Inc. and a Crosley New Car DealershipCrosley stopped production in approximately 1952.

In 1956, the company was sold to long time employees, Hill Cowan, who had been with Layfield since 1927, his brother, Jake Cowan and Charlie Freeman. In the fall of 1965 Layfield Motor Service Inc. moved to a new building in the basement of the J.M. Tull parking garage at 264 Luckie Street. This New 14,000 sq. ft. shop was located less than a mile from the Marietta Street Address.

In 1974, due to illness Jake Cowan sold his part of the business to his partners, Hill Cowan and Charlie Freeman. In 1980 after 53 years with the company Hill Cowan retried selling his half of the business to Tom Smith, who had been an employee since 1963. In 1985 Charlie Freeman retired selling his part of the company to his partner, Tom Smith.

In the spring of 1995, Layfield Motors Service Inc. relocated to a new facility at 314 Luckie Street. With entrances from Marietta, Simpson and Luckie Streets this over 15,000 sq. ft. Service Center was located one block north of the old location and still less than a mile from where it began over 85 years ago.

In the fall of 1995 Layfield Motors Service Inc. was purchased by long time employees Napoleon (Nap) Mack, being the longest employed dating back to 1969, and Calvin Watts (1972). Back on Marietta Street after over 85 years this company has made a complete cycle and stands ready to go into the new century serving Atlanta with the same Enthusiasm and Commitment that has seen it through the last century.

Come join us in the new millennium and find out how this company has done what few have - Stand the test of time!
